Educator - Speaker - Advocate
Born as “Theresa”, Jason grew up in Menomonie, WI and spent the last 15 years or so living in Eau Claire, WI. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire in 2008 he has spent 10 years in the classroom teaching instrumental and general music to students of all ages, from rural towns and urban cities. He came out as transgender to his students, school community, and the rest of the world on January, 5th 2017 at the age of 31 and began the physical process of transitioning from female to male. Throughout that process he began to learn about the trans community and their struggles firsthand.
Jason has a unique perspective influenced by being one of ten kids in his family, an identical triplet, and a teacher; all of which he attributes to causing such a delay in his realization that he was trans. In the couple of years since coming out he has become more and more of a voice for the local transgender community has since resigned from teaching full time to allow time to work as an LGBTQ advocate, mentor, and speaker. He strives to help bridge the gap between cisgender and transgender people in our area by helping to “trans-late” for each other. With a knack for drawing relevant comparisons, using common sense language and humor, and breaking down common myths and stereotypes he is able to help parents, youth, school teachers, community members, etc. as we all learn about this growing topic of gender identity.
